We start at the 38th Academy Awards and with an extremely diverse range of Best Picture nominees. From a family friendly sing-a-long frenzy, to a dirty story of shameless social clamoring, to an allegorical ship ride, to a quirky existential comedy and to an epic war time romance, there are few stones left un-turned by the collective nominees. The prevailing film, The Sound of Music, has endured as a classic and all timindexe Hollywood favourite 50 years on, whilst Doctor Zhivago has grown into one of David Lean’s career highlights, even being listed as number 39 on AFI’s original top 100 movies list, but are there any surprises in the 1966 nominees, or did the Academy get it right with the hugely popular musical?
