And the Oscar went to….Midnight Cowboy
The first year of the new decade (celebrating the best films from 1969 however), offers another diverse range of films. A western, a comedy musical, a French political thriller, a costume drama and a down-and-dirty drama.
Midnight Cowboy and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid have long since lived on as all time American favourites, with Midnight Cowboy eventually prevailing in the awards race. Interestingly it would be the first, and so far only, X-rated Best Picture winner after the previous year brought us the only G-rated winner to date in Oliver!
It was an uncharacteristic choice, and a gutsy one, by the Academy to award their top prize to the excruciatingly un-glamorious drama, but does that make it the right choice? Or did the Academy miss out on an opportunity to reward a better film?
