And the Oscar went to…One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

On the surface this looks to be the strongest year we’ve crossed so far. Every film has made its mark in history. Jaws, Cuckoo’s Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, and Nashville all appear on the AFI’s list of the top 100 films while Barry Lyndon has dominated other polls from Sight and Sound, the BBC and Time.

The director’s list is a who’s who as well. Spielberg burst on the scene with his seminal summer block buster Jaws. Stanley Kubrick offered what is considered one his finest which is truly saying something, as did Sidney Lumet and Robert Altman. It would be Milos Forman who would win Best Director though, with a film that would become only the second to win the top 5 Oscars (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay), dominating an amazing field.

In any other year Cuckoo’s Nest would breeze by the competition, but with this field certainly nothing is certain, so let’s find out how the Academy went.
